Outreach and Mentoring

I have mentored 8 students in research projects, including 4 undergraduate and 4 graduate students. At Caltech, I was the primary mentor for two undergraduate summer students, Gavin Wang and Sage Santomenna. I fully designed and supervised their research projects and supported their graduate school applications through recommendation letters. Both Gavin and Sage received graduate school offers starting in Fall 2026. Gavin's paper analyzing chemical and isotopic abundances with KPIC was published in AJ, and Sage is preparing two papers: one on new brown dwarf binaries and one presenting an open-source package for multi-component spectral fitting.

I also co-mentor two Caltech graduate students, Aniket Sanghi and Samuel Whitebook. Aniket first worked with me as an undergraduate in Summer 2022 on optimizing reference star libraries for high-contrast imaging, work that was published in AJ. Aniket now leads the imaging component of my JWST Cycle 4 program for ε Indi Ab as first author. At UCLA, I mentor first-year graduate student Carrie He on JWST/NIRSpec spectroscopy of directly imaged planets.

In 2019, I worked for six weeks as a Teaching and Residential Assistant for the Summer Science Program (SSP), where I am an alumnus (2014). In the Astrophysics program, I taught 36 students an intensive research project on asteroid orbital determination and supported telescope observations and data reduction. During college and at Caltech, I also worked as a TA for several physics and astronomy courses, including Observational Astrophysics, Intro to Astronomy, Advanced Intro Physics, Bayesian Statistics, and High Energy Astrophysics.
